2004-present Design Engineer, Balvac Limited – London, UK
Balvac Limited, a Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Limited company, is a structural repair, strengthening and maintenance contractor both in the UK and overseas. I work for the Rail Consultancy division. I am mainly involved with design and assessment engineering. I am currently involved in assessing a post-tensioned concrete footbridge that spans over a four lane carriageway and two slip roads and developing a methodology to demolish the superstructure in order to accommodate the new steel footbridge that is to be constructed. My responsibilities included the development of a demolition procedure, liaising with the Client, ensuring that the demolition procedure takes into regards the health and safety of employees and third parties, the environment and commercial considerations, etc. Chiltern Lines Platform Extensions, a recent design and build project, involved the extension of seven existing platforms. My duties as Design Manager on the project included reporting to the Project Manager, liaising with Network Rail for approval of the designs, help to develop a Health and Safety Plan, etc. I was also personally responsible for the design of three of the platform extensions. My responsibilities included the development of a design management programme, obtaining the necessary information to carry out the design, ensuring the buildability of the designs, liaising with Network Rail, liaising with suppliers, checking if the designs complied with the relevant current legislation, codes and standards, etc. I have undertaken several minor works design projects. Voulgaris Construction is an American construction company dealing in residential and commercial construction. I was involved with a new housing development. New apartment buildings were being constructed primarily for student occupation. I was the site engineer on one of the sites. Several buildings were being built at the same time and I was personally responsible for two buildings. My responsibilities included making sure that work was built according to the drawings and specification, assisting the foremen with any setting out that was too difficult, keeping to schedule, etc.

1999(Summer) Assistant Civil Engineer, Envitec – Pylos, Greece
Envitec is a Greek environmental engineering company, specialising in sewage treatment plants. I was part of the construction management team. While I was there, they were building the second of two reinforced concrete water tanks, setting out the main pipeline that was to be placed underneath the main road of the plant and other small buildings. My daily responsibilities were estimating how much concrete would be needed for that day’s work, setting out for the construction of buildings on site, testing the workability and strength of the concrete and calculating the daily costs of the work done on site.
